Achievable things in AB (using a tiny bit of imagination)

Since we all know that in Amibroker (almost) everything is possible but on the other hand it sometimes may still happen that some people are not yet fully aware of AmiBroker's endless amount of capabilities I thought it could be a good idea to start a thread about some of those things you can achieve with this (one of the most) fantastic software(s) around. So besides of creating reactions like "Oops, I didn't know that this would be doable" this thread is also supposed to provide some inspirations for own creations.

So long story short.... besides of being able to achieve almost everything with it you can also do these following things...

First example:

An interactive Boxplot of some data of choice

Single boxplot per single chart pane

Multi-boxplot per chart pane


Boxplot Y-zoom via mouse click and/or keystrokes

Boxplot X-zoom via mouse click and/or keystrokes
etc.

That's why we are here... helping to open the eyes of the ones not fully seeing the greater things being in the distance yet.


Here is a another cool one. This time it is one work by Dennis Brown.
The funny or rather astonishing thing is that it shows that AB even can be used for non trading related topics.
So this one really shows the wide range of flexibility of the software.

I am working on a project right now that uses AB as a general purpose (non-stock) language to animate the drawing of a mechanical device and graph its performance. It shows the mechanical positions of a hydro-pneumatic cylinder with different configurations that are parameterized with the sliders in the properties window.

I looked all over the web for a simple language that could do this. The key is that 80% of code is usually doing just user interface code. I finally decided that AFL would be the easiest thing for me to write this in. It is not the first time I have used AFL to write a program that has nothing to do with charting stocks.

I did my whole program with just parameter functions, low level Gfx functions and no array arithmetic.

Based on what I found from searching the web, I could see a spinoff of AFL with a few more general language functions (* like dimensioned arrays not tied to stocks and a few UI tweaks), to be a useful general interpreter language for easy to write programs to solve custom problems quickly, while still having good execution performance

Note: *multi-dim arrays have been natively implemented already.

It shows the simulator in action in animation mode. Yes, I added a free running animation mode.

I used a screen recording software program and just recorded it at 10 FPS, since my AB simulation was running at 10 steps per second. It is simulating a Hydro-Pneumatic system. The diagram is a cutaway of a cylindrical mechanism. You dial in the dimensional configuration and it draws it and simulates the work transfer efficiency. The one shown is the simplest configuration.

All the elements were drawn with low level graphics commands. The AFL listing is about 1000 lines, most of it concerned with the UI.

Enjoy the movie, and I hope it inspires you to more possibilities for using AB for doing more than just stock market tasks.

As for scatter charts there is another example creating interactive MAE MFE charts which in addition can be included to analysis report

Since there have been more graphic examples in this thread so far here is a one showing that things like Variance - Covariance - Matrix are quite easily achievable in AmiBroker also.

If you want to try to create Variance-Covariance matrix in AB yourself I'm going to upload a sample spreadsheet to the Excel thread amibrokerforum.proboards.com/thread/127/excel-thread?page=1&scrollTo=711 showing the basic concept. If you should face problems in your creation process then post in "Discussions" section.

The picture below showing output in AmiBroker's Interpretation window (as well as via Exploration) replicates the first three columns of the book 'Financial Modeling' by Simon Benninga of pages 293 to 294.
